Police officers told tragic pedestrian Ross Cowling's family that he had been killed by a car as they waited for him to arrive home on Christmas Eve.

The "loving" father left behind two young daughters, aged 10 and eight years, when paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene after he was involved in a collision with a Land Rover.

The 37-year-old's family today paid tribute to him in a statement which said: "Ross was a loving father, brother, uncle and son and we are all absolutely devastated.

"He had been on his way home to spend Christmas with his family. Ross leaves two young daughters, aged 10 and eight. We are all heartbroken."

Mr Cowling, from Luton, Beds., died from horrific injuries he suffered when he was in collision with a green Land Rover Defender at 5.35pm.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to save his life after an area in Maulden Road, Flitwick, was cordoned off and a police investigation was launched.

A spokesman for Bedfordshire Police said that officers investigating his death had spoken to the driver but was not arrested at the scene.

It was understood that Mr Cowling was hit while he was on the road and the driver was said to be helping officers with the investigation.

Forensic collision investigator police constable Ed Colley was today appealing for further witnesses to come forward to police after he examined the scene of the collision and was due to submit a report to the coroner for Bedfordshire.



Pc Colley said: "I would be keen to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident, and particularly anyone who saw a man walking along Maulden Road around this time. Any information can be useful to help us piece together the events leading up to the collision."

A post mortem examination was due to be carried out before an inquest into Mr Cowling's death will be opened and adjourned to a later date within the next few days.

A police spokesman said: "His family are being supported by specially trained officers.

"The driver of the vehicle has been spoken to and is helping police with the investigation.

"Anyone who witnessed the collision, or saw either the vehicle or Mr Cowling prior to it, should call PC Ed Colley from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Forensic Collision Investigation Unit on 101."
