A 26-year-old woman who got married earlier this month is battling for life after she was allegedly attacked and her throat slit by her neighbour, a spurned suitor, at Rajiv Colony, Sahibabad.
The woman, Ritu Chaudhary, got married to a man from Sonepat on March 4 and was visiting her home in Sahibabad to celebrate her first Holi after marriage.
According to the initial investigation, the attack was in retaliation to Chaudhary’s refusal to marry her neighbour Rajiv Kashyap, 28. The incident took place on Saturday morning when she was alone in the house and her mother was out tending to their fields. Kashyap allegedly barged into the house and inflicted severe injuries on her throat with a blade.

“It is suspected that he repeatedly attacked her throat with a blade and escaped when she cried for help. In her initial statements to doctors, she said that Kashyap had wanted to marry her and acted in retaliation after she married someone else,” said Anup Singh, circle officer, Sahibabad.
Following the incident, the victim’s uncle has forwarded a complaint to the police stating that Kashyap had entered Chaudhary’s house around 9.30am on Saturday and attacked her.
“He was angry as she had refused to marry him. So he attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon and slashed her throat deeply,” Nahar Singh, Chaudhary’s uncle said in his complaint.
Chaudhary has a widowed mother and a younger brother who is said to be mentally challenged. “She was alone in the house and her mother had gone out to look after their fields. My sister was boiling milk when Kashyap entered the house on finding her alone and slashed her throat. She tried to resist but he was able to injure her. She then cried for help and ran out the house. Locals rushed her to the hospital where she is being operated upon,” said Saurabh, her cousin.
“The police have called up Kashyap’s parents, but he has not appeared before the police so far. We have not been able to speak to my sister as she is unable to talk due to her injuries. I rushed to the hospital after I got a call from locals about the incident. I came to know that she has been operated upon twice for her injuries,” he added.
The police said Kashyap is presently on the run and his father has said they have legally cut him out of their property as he is involved in anti-social activities and is considered a local goon. The family has also forwarded a police complaint into the incident.
“We have sent teams to trace the culprit and he will be nabbed soon,” Singh said.
“Doctors said the woman has 50% chances of survival as she has suffered heavy blood loss,” he added.
