Mugabe receives wheelchair amongst other gifts to celebrate his 93 birthday
Mugabe receives expensive gifts, including wheelchair, as 93rd birthday gifts from his cabinet members.
- President Robert Mugabe has received an array of expensive gifts, including a nine-carat gold wristwatch and a special chair - However, the special chair has attracted the attention of Zimbabwe's social media, which has likened it to a wheelchair - First Lady Grace Mugabe was quoted last year saying Mugabe will rule, even from a wheelchair.
The nine-carat gold wristwatch
and the special chair received the most attention on social media. The state broadcaster and government spokespersons gave it a variety of names, including "massage chair" and "special mobile chair." Commentators on social media were quick to label it a straightforward wheelchair and to link it to comments attributed to First Lady Grace Mugabe indicating that President Mugabe will rule "even from a wheelchair.
"We are going to create a special wheelchair for President Mugabe until he rules to 100 years, because that's what we want." She later said President Mugabe will rule even from the grave.
President Mugabe expressed his appreciation to his Cabinet Ministers for "putting their heads together" to come up with the gift ideas. He is set to contest next year's Presidential elections.
