Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe turned 93 on Tuesday and vowed to continue ruling the country despite widespread fears over his health and advanced age.

According to reports, Mugabe said his party, the ZANU-PF, still wants him to remain in power and that he can only heed calls for his resignation if they came from ZANU-PF.

Speaking at a luncheon to mark his birthday, he added that he feels strong enough to continue ruling.

Local reports further indicate that ZANU-PF is set to spend $2.5 million on celebrations to mark the birthday of the world's oldest ruler. These celebrations will culminate in an event to be held at the Matobo National Park in Bulawayo on Saturday.

Opposition parties and critics have slammed the expenditure, calling it wasteful and exorbitant in a country where poverty levels are high and the economy is struggling. However, as in previous birthdays of the President, thousands are expected to attend the event on Saturday.

Mugabe said that there is no "acceptable" alternative in the ZANU-PF at the moment and hence he will run for another term of office in next year's elections.

His wife, Grace, was quoted last week saying he will be on the ballot box for the elections even if he passes away before then.
